GRANT HOTTLE
Mar 7th - 31st, 2008
OPENING RECEPTION MAR 7TH
6:00PM - 10:00PM
The paintings of Grant Hottle are a psychological exploration of transition and transitional spaces. They teeter on the fence of knowing and unknowing by playing with the rules of physical reality. It is in this dreamlike world where Hottle can tease out a bit of weirdness by reshuffling our expectations. “Gravity can be denied”, “Straight lines warble and bend” and the questioning of these seemingly realistic interiors and spaces begins. Questioning is a form of participation, and participation is a major part of Hottles world. He allows just enough space and ambiguity for the viewer to insert their own interpretation. More like a stagehand than a storyteller, Hottle allows us in but the experience is self-reflexive and embraces individual interpretation. And this is all accomplished within the confines and limitations of paint. The materiality of the surface is a reminder that we are merely participants in this illusion.
