JOHN BRODIE
OCTOBER 3RD - 31ST, 2008
OPENING RECEPTION OCTOBER 3RD
6:00PM - 9:00PM
These new super-sized paintings/collages, in John Brodie’s first solo
show since 2006, survey the swirling absurdity, frenzy and desire of
living the Western modern life. Merging oil and acrylic abstract
painting with the ever hopeful/fearful media images of the past 60 years
- including images literally ripped from one of our present day beacons
of desire, the billboard - Brodie continues his on-going fascination
with mixed-media collage and its ability to communicate complex and
entangled ideas of history, place and longing.
Brodie, who has been painting for about 20 years, was a member of the
notorious 333 Studios in NE Portland for 10 years and showed in all
eight of their “October Shows”. He has had solo shows at LoveLake, The
Astoria Visual Arts Center, Stumptown and the Walters Cultural Arts
Center. His work was included in Elizabeth Leach Gallery’s “25th
Anniversary Exhibition: A Century of Collage,” among others. In 2007, he
founded TodayArt Studios, a 9000-square foot studio space in SE Portland
that provides working studios to seven Portland artists with a
cost-sharing, non-profit philosophy. He also owns a Frenchy restaurant,
and will have a solo show in November at Lunar Boy Gallery in Astoria, OR.
